The asociation · The pet industry, in figures

General data of the pet industry and trade sector

In Spain there are more than 28 million pets. In more than 40% of households there is a pet, a figure that has grown considerably in the last 10 years, but which is still lower than in neighboring EU countries.

In Spain there are more than 6,000 veterinary clinics and about 5.00 retail stores or petshops between chains, proximity stores, franchises and large stores.

More pets than children

In Spain there are more dogs than those under 15 years of age, according to data from the Spanish Network for the Identification of Companion Animals (Reiac). And only in the city of Madrid the number of these pets doubles that of children under three years of age.

The consulting firm GFK goes further and states that 62% of Spaniards over 15 years of age have a pet in Spain, while in the US the figure reaches 70%. With these data it is logical to think that having a business oriented to the care of companion animals will produce great benefits.

The world market
A report by Grand View Research reveals that the world market will grow by around 5% annually to exceed 200,000 million dollars (180,000 million euros) in 2025.

Pets move 2,000 million in Spain, the fifth European market

Spain is the fifth largest pet market in Europe, according to Euromonitor International. Ahead were the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy.

The pet industry and business sector has a turnover of 2,000 million euros a year, at a rate of 1,000 million in food and hygiene products, 300 million in the acquisition of companion animals and 700 million to be distributed between clinics, products and complemnetos, services and hairdressing and aesthetics.

The online petcare trade

Electronic commerce for these products grew by 25% and now accounts for between 5% and 6% of sales. This channel became very popular with consumers during the crisis, as it offers lower prices and the added value of home delivery. However, the specialized stores of the large supermarkets have also gained ground, of course, at the expense of the progressive disappearance of the small neighborhood stores.

The sector in Europe

In 2020, the pet care sector had a turnover of 40,500 million euros, 2.8% more. In the European Union there are some 80 million households that have at least one pet. With a population of 74,407 million cats and 66,375 million dogs, the pet business is growing and diversifying.

Expense per pet

According to the European Federation of the Pet Food Industry (Fediaf) in Europe the average monthly expenditure per household on dogs and cats is 217 euros. The Ministry of Agriculture estimates the average monthly expenditure in Spain at 130 euros for dogs and 91 euros for cats.
Spaniards spend an average of 1,260 euros a year on their pets in 2019, 7.3% more than 2 years ago. That is, € 823 in food, € 353 in veterinary expenses and € 83 in accessories and toys.

The data collected highlights that in Spain, in general, it is women (86%) who are responsible for the care and purchase of products or services for companion animals.

Profile of the companies in the sector. Distributors, manufacturers and retail
The number of companies stands at 12,358 in 2020, when in 2010 there were 8,000.
Regarding distribution and production, these companies declare that they invoice an average of 3,963,793 euros annually. However, they are surpassed by wholesalers and manufacturers, with 4.5 and 4.4 million, respectively.

Regarding the sales that are made, 83% are national and 17% abroad. For manufacturers, sales abroad represent 23% and for breeders 35%. The export destination countries are, in order of importance: Portugal (31%), France (23%), Italy (9%) and Germany (7%).
The sales channels in Spain are 11% online and 89% in physical stores, where there are more than 5,000 to meet the needs of the more than 20 million pets in Spain.

Regarding the turnover of the business (according to type of store), the average is 315,008 euros. The months in which it is billed the most are July and December. Small stores have a turnover of 115,318 euros, medium-sized ones, 268,582 euros and large stores, 1,043,357 euros per year.

Pet adoptions in Spain

During the last years and due to the increase in the level of awareness and social sensitivity of citizens, the adoption rate has increased considerably although the number of pets acquired through purchase continues to predominate.

Despite the fact that it is estimated that 44% of abandoned cats and dogs are eventually adopted by other families, the numbers of animal abandonment are still very high.

The abandonment of animals is one of the main social concerns in our country. They occur mainly in summer, and their effects can be mitigated thanks to the work of associations and animal rights and protective entities that, together with the public administration and the contributions of companies and professionals in the sector, reduce the impact it causes on the well-being and health of their own. animals.
